during my time off earlier this month sarah and i went bouldering at memphis rox. we had both been wanting to check out the space, and a random monday morning provided us the time and space to experiment to our hearts’ content.
we paid our suggested donation and got a tour of the space from adam, one of the staff members, before donning our shoes and getting started. all told we scaled 7 routes and began a few others in the 45ish minutes we were there and had a great time.
memphis rox is located in soulsville across from the stax museum and is set up to provide climbing opportunities to everyone in the community regardless of their ability to pay. people can climb on a day-to-day basis or purchase a membership, and those who cannot pay can volunteer their time in the gym or other local nonprofits in exchange for being able to climb and use the other facilities. it has allowed youth access to climbing and bouldering who might not have otherwise had that access, and it has been a great asset to the memphis community. i hope to go back again soon.
