veen on the road: santa fe.

hello! we have made it to the final stop of our new mexico road trip! after hopping around to three national parks we were ready to be in one place for a few days, and santa fe was exactly the right pace for us.

somewhere in new mexico. february 2024.

jeremy had some work calls during the day tuesday, so we drove to truth or consequences [how could we not?] to work from there during the day and break up the drive. unfortunately for us on tuesdays all the coffee shops with free wifi are closed, but luckily we were pointed toward turtleback coworking so we bought a day pass and camped out there for the day.

once jeremy wrapped up we took off for santa fe, arriving at our airbnb around 8 that night. we ate really quickly and both crashed hard.

got to meet aja in person! santa fe, new mexico. february 2024.

one of my big highlights of the trip was getting to meet aja on wednesday morning. aja runs the momentum squad, a group of women and non-binary folks who were a great sounding board for me during my last job search, and i was so excited to be able to meet her in person after nearly four years of virtual interactions. we met at betterday coffee and had a great time chatting and catching up.

an urban hike, if you will. santa fe, new mexico. february 2024.

on thursday jeremy and i wanted to go for a hike, but most of the trails outside the city still had snow and ice on them and we ultimately decided it wasn’t worth the risk. instead we drove back into town and walked up to the cross of the martyrs — it was a nice walk and we both enjoyed reading the historical markers along the path. in case you didn’t already know [i didn’t], santa fe is the oldest state capital in the united states, and the markers detail significant points from the city’s history. after our urban hike we spent some time wandering through santa fe’s downtown, peeking in shops and getting the lay of the land, before stopping into häagen dazs for some ice cream.

spa day! santa fe, new mexico. february 2024.

and then friday was the pièce de résistance, our spa day at ojo santa fe. we got there early so we could have the whole day, and it was incredible. we started with a soak in one of the thermal pools before i left for my massage and hot oil hair treatment, both of which were amazing. i rejoined jeremy after, and once i ate we did another soak before closing out our day in the steam room. it was such a cool experience, and we were lucky to have beautiful weather while we were there. great way to wrap up our trip.

loved this rug. santa fe, new mexico. february 2024.

know before you go:

  • the altitude is no joke. santa fe has an elevation of ~7,000 feet, and we both took a few days to adjust to it. drink lots of water, and be especially careful if you’re going to do any hiking that has additional elevation
  • there are two ojo spas — ojo santa fe [the one we went to], which is between albuquerque and santa fe, and ojo caliente, which is between santa fe and taos. if you make any reservations ahead of time, make sure you have the correct location. day passes are available for both if you’re not staying on-site, and individual treatments or private soaks are an additional cost
  • one place i didn’t get to but was interested in was the georgia o’keeffe museum, so if any of you go let me know how it is

there’s so much more to explore in new mexico, but i’m pretty happy with how we spent our week. and hopefully i’ll be able to get back out there to see the rest one day.

xx
