jeremy has a goal to visit every u.s. state before his 40th birthday [august 2027] and wanted to check off connecticut and rhode island, so he made a quick visit to do so. he landed in nyc on friday afternoon, and early saturday morning we picked up a car and hit the road.

providence.
providence is a little over a 3-hour drive from the city, so we arrived at the risd museum around 12.15pm. we went straight to the cafe to get some food, and then while i joined a zoom call in the outdoor courtyard jeremy sat in the cafe and read. once i finished my call we made our way to the top floor of the museum and then worked our way down from there. i particularly liked the egyptian, asian textiles, and native artists honoring the seal exhibits.
- admission is $22 // free on sundays from 10am-5pm and thursdays from 5-8pm
- there’s a cafe that has a limited food and beverage list // i had the avocado toast and it was pretty good but pricey
- the main exhibits are spread out over 4 floors but the museum covers multiple buildings that are connected in a bit of a hodgepodge, so there’s some backtracking required to make sure you see everything
after the museum we drove around brown university’s campus and pretended we were smart ivy league students.

new haven.
this whole adventure was a real make-it-up-as-we-go situation, and after we drove through new haven on the way to providence and i mentioned that new haven is known for their pizza, jeremy said “why don’t we stop in new haven on our way back and try some of their pizza” which i thought was a splendid idea. i texted sanjeet and benjamin for recommendations and based on their enthusiasm we found ourselves at bar. i appreciate that their entire food menu is one type of salad and then various kinds of pizza; we shared a plate of salad, jeremy had the buff chick pizza, and i had the portrait of new haven pizza. all the food was excellent and we both came home with lots of leftovers.
we also drove around yale’s campus and thought a lot of ourselves for having seen two ivy league campuses in one day.
and that was our adventure! i had been to providence once before but this was the first time i set foot in connecticut so i also got to cross a new state off my list, and i got to spend a few days catching up with jeremy. a win-win for everyone.
