from the time i moved into my house 3 years ago i have been wanting to build a shelving unit in the middle room of my house [you know, the one i keep trying to refer to as the library]. having been built in 1922 my house has exactly 1 closet [in my bedroom] and very little storage, so i knew built-in shelves and cabinets would add both aesthetics and functionality to the space.
troy, one of my brother’s best friends and one of my adopted big brothers, has a custom woodworking business in little rock, and i have been keeping him in the back of my mind to build something for me. once i finally had some money saved up and he had space in his schedule, he came over to look at the space, take measurements, and get a feel for what i wanted, and he worked on it as he had time.
the shelves were ready in early february but we got waylaid by winter weather and rain, so instead they were installed in early march. i cannot express how thrilled i am with them, from the craftsmanship to the deep green rainforest color, and my heart overflows each time i see that beautiful bench seat, a dream of mine since i was a little girl.
i love being able to arrange my books in an order that makes sense to me, i love sitting in that nook on a weekend morning and reading, and i love love love having the cabinets at the bottom for extra storage. right now they hold extra sheets and towels, all of my reusable tote bags, my collection of cards and postcards, and a year’s supply of toilet paper, and it’s so nice to have a place to stuff all of that out of sight.
below are some pictures so you can see what it looks like in the room as well as some closeups if you’d like to see the various knickknacks i’ve collected across the years. and if you are in the mid-south region and would like something for yourself, take a look through some of troy’s other work and reach out to him! i’m totally biased, but he’s an absolute delight.

i don’t normally do this, but if you’d like to know more about some of the decor:
