veen on the road: a weekend getaway to beacon.

one of my 2024 goals is to explore more of new york state, and maggie and abi helped me kick this off with a lovely weekend trip to beacon.

we drove up on saturday afternoon and our first stop was dia: beacon, a contemporary art museum housed in a former nabisco factory. we had a great time wandering through the various exhibits, learning more about the artists and their pieces, and eavesdropping on other people’s conversations. the space is huge and feels like it goes on forever and i appreciated all the different types of art on display, ensuring there is something for everyone. we also took a turn through the garden before leaving and loved it.

these snacks were very good. beacon, new york. may 2024.

after a quick stop by our hotel to drop our stuff and freshen up, we made our way to beacon’s main street. we didn’t have an agenda, so when paul brady wine caught our eye we decided to head in there for a drink and some snacks — the wine was good and the snacks were fantastic and we had a great time chatting and watching the kentucky derby.

from there we continued our wandering and found our way to reserva wine bar. we grabbed seats at the bar, made friends with tanner the bartender and co-owner, and enjoyed snacking and drinking while listening to the band that was playing. highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area, and they have a live jazz brunch at the weekend that sounds like a lot of fun.

on sunday our plans for a hike got rained out, so we instead decided to wander main street again and pop into the stores we had seen the previous evening. we made pit stops at beacon cheese shop, finders keepers vintage store, the farmers market [where maggie and i got some great hot sauces from some like it hot], zakka joy gift shop, flora good times plant shop, and little king. after that it was time for lunch at the vault and a quick stop at trax roasters to get coffee and hot chocolate for the drive back.

all told we were gone about 27 hours, and it was pretty perfect. it was so nice to have a quick break from the city, and i couldn’t have asked for better company. we’re hoping to do one more trio trip this year, so stay tuned to see where we go next!

xx
